I really do learn something new every day. In my work (I'm an RN in the NICU at Primary Children's Hospital) we are required to be perpetual learners. Isn't that great! There are always new advancements in medicine and technology. In nursing it is important to follow "best practice" and "evidence based" learning. Not all my ah-aha moments are at work. I learn many things from my children....even more so as they try to bring this old lady into the techno world. I also learn great things from my parents, and of course my greatest teacher is my hubby. He always shares great wisdom and discoveries he has had throughout his day with me, and it enlightens me.
I was thinking about the fact that so often I think, "I learn something new every day," today.... when I learned about Salmon.
Greg and I are on a vacation in Lake Tahoe Nevada/California. It is fall, our favorite time for a get away, until winter, when January is....if it is to somewhere warm! Anyway, we decided to rent bikes and ride along a bike path. There were scenic stops along the way. One was at Taylor Creek that feeds into Lake Tahoe. We happened upon a great even. The Salmon are spawning! I've heard about it but never seen it before.

So this is what happens. Salmon "spawn" or reproduce in the rivers, and then the after they hatch they swim out to live in the lake. When they are 2-4 years old they return to the river of their birth to "spawn" They have to swim upstream to get up the river to their birthplace. They jump up rapids, and finagle the beaver dams to get to their original home. It's really quite amazing. They find their way by taste and smell of the water and surroundings. The males start to morph. Their mouths become hooked and they get a hump on their backs. All the fish turn a bright red.

So besides learning that they return to there birth to spawn, or to give birth again, I learned that after they spawn they die. The creek was full of dead fish. I thought something was contaminated in the water! One guy said to Greg, "I'm glad I don't die after I spawn!" True that!
After they die, the insects and other fish eat them and the circle of life is started all over again.
How about this picture...gross but kind of cool.
She's been his good friend since early elementary school. We have loved Katie for years, and so has Taylor. If I could describe Katie I would say:

Katie is gentle

she is beautiful

self-sufficient and hard working

She is quiet, but not shy

She loves Taylor, and that is the most important thing to this Mom

Somethings I hope Katie knows about Taylor, and I think she probably does...

Taylor is one of the most kind people I know

He can be very strong willed, which is a good thing usually

He doesn't like his picture taken

I never understood why because he was the cutest little Tay Tay

and he has grown into a handsome man

Taylor takes pride in his work and works hard

Congratulations to the two of them....we love you both!

This summer went by faster than any I remember.

Too much work and not enough play.

We sent Ryan off on his mission,

Enjoyed our grand daughter

Had some fun vacations, and now it's time to head back to school!

Speaking of school, Lindsey graduates with her masters degree in three weeks! Way to go Lindsey!

Just got back from Pagosa Springs Colorado. On the way we stopped at Arches National Park

I've lived in Utah most of my life, but haven't ever been to Arches, it was amazingly deserty (made up that word) and red rock beautiful. Now I have seen with my own eyes the arches on our state license plates.

Greg and I went with Lauren and her friend Laura Wouden. We camped at the KOA campground....I would not recommend it...noisy with a train that passes every hour or so day and night, and a major highway with trucks that have screechy breaks. Not to mention our site backed the river that made me feel like I needed to go potty all night! But the trip was fun enough to write home about so I will overlook the campsite!
Lava Hot Springs is a little sleepy town in Idaho. There are natural mineral springs minus the sulfur that is often in hot pots. The town has some fun things to do for a quick get away. There is a large olympic sized swimming pool with platform diving boards and water slides. We didn't try out the platform diving boards...too old and too chicken! My sister did it when we were young and ended up with a few stitches...bad memories.
The next thing we did was soak in the hot pools. There is an area that has been cemented in and there are about 6 large hot pools. Kind of like massive hot tubs. They range in temperatures of 102 to 110. They made me a little sick to my stomach after sitting in them for too long, but they were fun, and if it would have been a chillier day I would have enjoyed them more.
The final thing we did was tubing on the Portneuf river. It was a blast. The river is fairly shallow, not to swift, and the hot springs feed into it making the water fairly warm. There are tube rental places all over town. It was swift enough with a few rapids to keep things exciting, but not too dangerous that I was scared. I'd definitely recommend it. I think Lava Hot Springs would be a great place for a youth activity. Either a Youth Conference or a girls camp.Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-1716643317850477152012-06-20T22:24:00.000-06:002012-07-24T22:34:54.248-06:00Ryan's Farewell
Ryan got his mission call to the Georgia Atlanta mission, and left for the MTC on June 20, 2012. It's been an interesting period of time as he has prepared to get ready to go.

Shopping with a rather OCD child can take a long time. It can cost a lot of money...to find the right suit, shirts, and shoes that feel right! He is a little, okay probably a lot nervous about the whole thing, but I think he will do great!

Even though there have been many times I would have liked to make time stand still, it has kept marching forward. I find it doesn't do anyone any good to long for the past, or try to stop time from moving forward. I find that we have to decide each day what we will do to make the next days better, and take time in our days to enjoy the moments we are living and experiencing.
I feel a little sentimental and "old" because I see my children growing up. It seems like such a short time ago I spent almost every waking...and some of the moments I needed to be sleeping, caring for them...loving them, teaching them, policing them, directing them, nurturing them and making sure they were safe, healthy and progressing. Now I find myself with great memories, some regrets, and marveling at who they are becoming.
It is a payday for me to spend Sunday evenings with my family. It seems that is the day we all find time to spend a few moments together. There are other times too, any time I get a few minutes in their busy lives is wonderful! I have always loved sports...as a spectator, never very good at any of them. A huge part of my time as a mother has been spent cheering on the boys and their sports. They have done Karate,Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Soccer. Lauren played soccer for awhile and loved it. Lauren was a babe in arms as we toted her to baseball games at all times of the day and night. Poor thing. Many a nap was had in the stroller, bundled up to keep warm. She was yelling plays to the players by the time she could talk, and had the snack bar routine down pat!

So now our boys aren't involved in sports, and Lauren would love to do soccer again, but we haven't signed her up....we spend our time cheering for the Jazz and BYU! It is the season of college basketball playoffs, and BYU is still in the tournament. Hopefully this post won't jinx them! Hopefully they make it to the "Sweet 16". Jimmer Fredette is all the rage, and seems unstoppable. GO CouGARS!
Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-28597098958300765232011-03-11T18:57:00.002-07:002011-03-11T19:04:29.918-07:00Entering the Grandma Era
Just before we left on a spectacular vacation to Hawaii, (to be blogged in another post), Matt and Sharlene came over to our house to announce the future arrival of our first grandchild! I've been waiting to post about it until she had been to the doctor and was ready to make the announcement to everyone, but now it is official!
Greg decided we should call him/her Rango, until we know what sex the baby is and Matt and Shar decide on a name. I think it has a cute ring to it, and it will motivate his/her parents to decide on a better name! Rango is a lizard from a new animated movie we saw last weekend. He is a funny little character, and lets face it, fetal babies really do look a bit like lizards!
Congratulations to Matt and Sharlene. The due date is October 14, 2011.Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-80035400618502184992011-01-31T00:46:00.010-07:002011-02-21T19:39:29.903-07:00Family Movie NightSo while Greg snores away in the other room and I can't fall asleep...because I have a problem with sleeping when I am suppose to be sleeping...I thought I'd make a new post.

We decided a few weeks ago to start having a Family Movie Night. We have to plan times to get together with our family because we are all so busy, and we thought it would be fun to visit in each others homes. Our first movie night was last night....and it didn't disappoint!

Cam and Lindsey hosted it, and we watched Mega Mind. Not many of us had seen it before, and it was a hit! I love the holiday season, although I do get stressed out about getting everything done. This year I did pretty good. No last minute wrapping on Christmas Eve, Cards sent out BEFORE Christmas, neighbor gift delivered on time....But I think the best part of this Christmas was the time I spent with my family. I saw more of my older boys and their wives, than I have in a long time. I miss them. I miss seeing them everyday, so it was fun to see them a little more. I know they are busy, so I really treasure the times we spend together. I love Sunday dinners and getting together for even a short time during the week. During the holidays it was like lots of Sunday dinners closer together. It was great! It was also fun to see my darling nieces and nephews and my brothers and sisters. I have a spectacular extended family who I love very much.

Christmas used to be exciting for me because of the excitement the kids had for the gifts they would get. The skateboards, the game systems, the vacations, the gadgets....etc. Now everyone pretty much knows what they are getting and the excitement level is much less. I think I need some grandchildren to bring the excitement back to Christmas! I'll be patient though..no pressure. I enjoyed this Christmas seeing the kids be excited for the gifts they were giving. They were all generous and thoughtful and made sure Greg and I knew we are loved, not necessarily by the gifts, but the kind words and actions.

Each New Year we have a family "toast". It is a time of reflection over the last year and looking forward to the New Year. Some of the family actually kept their resolutions from last year! Way to go!!! Greg dropped some pounds, Ryan went a year without fast food, I am more technical...can't you tell :) I can now put my own music on my I-pod, and I keep plugging along with this blog. Before our toast Greg shared with us some counsel from Elder Jeffery Holland.
I thought I'd add some tidbits of his advise for the New Year.

As a new year begins and we try to benefit from a proper view of what has gone before, I plead with you not to dwell on days now gone nor to yearn vainly for yesterdays, however good those yesterdays may have been. The past is to be learned from but not lived in....when we have learned what we need to learn and have brought with us the best that we have experienced, then we look ahead and remember that faith is always pointed toward the future. Faith always has to do with blessings and truths and events that will yet be efficacious in our lives.

There is something in many of us that particularly fails to forgive and forget earlier mistakes in life--either our mistakes or the mistakes of others. It is not good. It is not Christian. It stands in terrible opposition to the grandeur and majesty of the Atonement of Christ. To be tied to earlier mistakes is the worst kind of wallowing in the past from which we are called to cease and desist.

God doesn't care nearly as much about where you have been as He does about where you are and, with His help, where you are willing to go. This is an important matter to consider at the start of a new year--and every day ought to be the start of a new year and a new life. Such is the wonder of faith, repentance, and the miracle of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The poet Robert Browning wrote: Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be....

Keep your eyes on your dreams, however distant and far away. Live to see the miracles of repentance and forgiveness, of trust and divine love that will transform your life today, tomorrow and forever. That is a New Year;s resolution I ask you to keep!

The entire article can be found in the January 2010 Ensign

As a family we made our own resolutions. They were heart felt and it was a warm fuzzy time for me. I need that sometimes as a mom!

Best wishes for a Spectacular New Year to everyone!Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-82594068853522955602010-12-06T21:34:00.011-07:002010-12-07T10:46:46.136-07:00Twenty-five Years...I love you more than ever before!

Night of our "first date" a drive up Provo Canyon Spring 1983
Look at us NOW! Not just the two of us anymore! October 2010

When I think back over twenty five years I think about all the things I never really knew would come into my life as a young twenty-year old girl, getting married, and dreaming about the future. There are things you don't even know to dream about. There were things that others had advised me about as being important for a happy future, and some things I knew in my heart were important. There were numerous other things that I would say I didn't even know to wish for, that for some remarkable reason I was blessed with by marrying Greg. Our anniversary was June 20, 2010, and in the fashion of most of my posts, this is late, but better late than forgotten or not recorded. Here are some of the things that I love about Greg...these are the things I knew from the start.

He is kind. Greg is kind to everyone he meets. He genuinely cares about people.

Greg is a hard worker. When we got married he was a grunt worker at "Swings and Things". That didn't bother me. I knew that better things would come along. Greg has always had a good job. He works hard, he is honest and gives every job he does his seal of excellence.

Greg is a worthy Priesthood holder. He honors his Priesthood, and it blesses our home. My dad was never one to give lots of dating advise, but the one thing that stuck with me over the years was, "Marry someone whose mother doesn't have to wake them up to go to Priesthood meeting." I saw that attribute in Greg, and I respect him for his faithfulness.

Greg's parents have both passed away, but I can truly say that he is a devoted and loving son. He is still a wonderful son to my parents, he was a loving grandson to my grandmother. There is a lot of pressure being an only child. Greg served, loved and respected his parents, even when there was a tremendous burden associated with caring for them. He was always able to weigh our his parents needs, and his own families needs and balance them remarkably.

Greg is funny. He has a great sense of humor. Sometimes I probably am not fun enough. He likes to joke and tease and laugh. Who wouldn't love to be around someone like that!

Greg is honest. He always considers what would be fair for everyone involved.

Greg is handsome. He makes my heart skip a beat when I see him in a crowd, when I hear his voice I feel peaceful, when I see him smile I know true happiness. As the years go on he gets more and more conscious of his aging body. When I look at him, I don't notice that he is any older, he just looks like Greg...he still makes me smile, he makes my soul happy and I can't imagine anyone or anything could be more beautiful for me.

Here are some of the things that were bonuses, that I had not realized I would get as part of the package when I married Greg.

He is a terrific father. I have to say, I wondered how he would do at Fatherhood. I knew he was a great person, and loving and kind...but would be even like babies--he was an only child after all. Wow--glad I never really concerned myself with worrying about that one. Greg was a natural. He loved, cuddled and nurtured probably better than I did at times. He will be a terrific grandpa someday. I can hardly wait to watch him!

Greg is creative. If anyone in the family needs a great idea for a poster, a slogan, a logo or a story, Greg is the man for the job. He is creative in his work as well. When he was in sales, he always found a way to close the sale by being creative. He has re-invented himself and his skill set over and over again to stay on top of the game.

Greg loves to travel. How lucky am I? Okay, this is one of the things I really did worry about. Before we were married Greg had not traveled much at all. He was afraid of flying. He'd had a harrowing experience over the ocean coming home from Taiwan, on his mission, that had made him fearful. I had hopes and dreams of seeing all I could. Little did I know he would overcome the fear of flying, and become a million-miles frequent flier! We have traveled to Europe, Asia, South America and all over the US. He values vacations...and so do I.

Greg loves pets. For a guy who's mom wasn't patient with animals in the house, he has forged new territory! He has encouraged pets. We've had cats, dogs, fish, gerbils, lizards, turtles, birds, a sugar glider....I probably am forgetting something....but he loves all creatures and have made it fun to be a pet owner.

Greg likes to shop. He may disagree because he doesn't want everyone to know that he shops. He shops stores, on-line, catalogs....he knows how to find a good deal, and he loves to find good deals. He studies out the choices, smells the shampoo, reads the consumer reports and reviews...then looks for the best price. I love him for that!

Greg is a gadget guy. I put this on my list of bonuses, because other that being a little pricey at times, it is fun to be up to date with cool gadgets. He is mostly an electronics gadget guy, but he has some pretty good collections of camping gadgets, knives, and tools too. I learn new and exciting things that he has found. We once had a spider vacuum, which came in handy when he was at work and a spider needed to be destroyed. He had one of the first brick cell phones....oh those were the days. He's up to date on new televisions, computers and mp3 players. Maybe all guys like gadgets...but he's the guy I know best and I love it!

Greg gives thoughtful, wonderful gifts. He has never missed a birthday or holiday. He chooses the perfect things for whoever he is giving to. This may go along with the last item of being a gadget guy, or the one before of liking to shop...whatever it is, he makes the holidays great. He does the shopping, I do the decorations! He lets me shop a little, but he does such a good job...I say...go for it! He's camped out in front of Best Buy, waited in a huge line in front of Walmart for a Fruby...only to be disappointed. He knows how to "snipe" bids on e-bay...YEAH... and he always finds the best, perfect gifts. Who would have known Owl poop was so interesting?, or that Creepy Crawlers or Lego's were just right that year...Greg did.

Greg always wanted a daughter, so he could have a Daddy's girl. I had now idea that we'd get one. I knew he could be rough and tumble with the boys. Watch the super hero movies until the tapes wore out, but I didn't know he'd sit through the "Nutcracker", or be truly interested in how the first Make-up session at the Mac Counter went. He adores his daughter, and she him.

Greg is my best friend. That is something Greg always encourages the kids to keep at the top of their list of important things in finding a spouse. He definitely is mine. He is the first one I want to tell exciting things to, the one I want to be with when I get to do something fun, and for sure the one whose arms I want holding me when I am sad. He can tell me the truth even if it isn't what I wanted to hear because I know he is telling me to be helpful, not hurtful.

Greg has taught me to listen first to understand. He is a great listener. I want to be more like him...I think I am becoming more like him.

Greg is a cheerleader. Never saw it coming! He boosts me up...motivates...and makes sure I finish what I start, do the best I can with all the support he can muster. He has stood by me through years of school, interviewing for jobs, organizing committees, church callings, motherhood....if there is anyone I wouldn't want to disappoint, it would be Greg.

Well honey...I could go on and on, but the Ambien I took to help me sleep is kicking in..I will post this with a big thanks for a great 25 years. I feel like some days it is all I can do to get up and do the "have to do's" and I don't get or take time for the "would love to do's..." The more I learn the process of entering blogs and working with the blog, the more likely I will be to actually recording things on it.

In thinking back over the passed year there are some events I haven't blogged about that I really don't want to miss. I think I will add them as separate blogs and title them accordingly so that everything isn't in one big blog.Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-59051351778146154332010-11-19T09:45:00.000-07:002010-11-19T21:59:35.966-07:00Welcome to the Family

Matthew Allen Romero and Sharlene Witt Romero

Family Picture taken May 29, 2010 at the Joseph Smith Building

Matt and Sharlene Witt were married on May 29, 2010. Can't believe it has almost been six months and I haven't put it on my blog....it is because I am not technically able, but I will try. Sharlene was a beautiful bride. I thought of her a couple of weeks ago when I was watching TLC's "Say Yes to the Dress"...the show depicts girls grieving over which overpriced dress to buy. I was flabbergasted at the prices of the dresses! It made me think of Matt and Sharlene. Sharlene's dress was far less than 10,000.00 and she was absolutely gorgeous! I can't imagine that choosing which overpriced dress to wear for a day, could be of any importance in the realm of what is really important in this world!

Sharlene and Matt have been friends for many years. As we started to think back about how long they had known each other we realized it had been since second grade. Their sixth grade school teacher, Mrs. "O"-Ostermiller, came to their reception. She said it was the first students from the same class that she taught that actually got married. They had an on again off again relationship because we all know that timing is everything...and sometimes the timing has to wait. They always had mutual love and respect for each other.

Matt returned home from this mission in August or 2009, and by October, had proposed to Sharlene. She had a very full plate at the time. She was just going to graduate from Southern Utah University with a BS in Business, and ready to find a "real job". She was very involved in her Sorority-and very stressed. Somehow they both made it through. They were married in May of 2010, in the Joseph Smith Building. It was a beautiful wedding, and the reception was at my parents house in their yard. The weather was beautiful, and it was a fun reception.

Sharlene started a job as an assistant event coordinator for the Salt Palace Convention Center, and Matt is working at Oakland Construction in their IT department. He is hoping to get back into school soon. They have one of the cutest little dogs in the entire world. His name is Baxter, and I am a proud grandma....he is house broken, doesn't bark, entertains himself with the funniest games and is so entertaining. They really lucked up with such a wonderful little dog.Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-3455651015472048032010-07-19T18:46:00.013-06:002010-09-03T17:22:41.982-06:00Romero's Summer of Fun<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOJ1A9rMWquG1ZV3ePs8jOju_1Q-jJ0v1CS0kXQ1Kl9m0PUzjgqxptMlZAQnrjirGQ2zuzTZ9d7cgqLmfUdyRY5UJsHfFn76nnLAfbG5HfNC8oTRwVXoBPuWTJBOyD8QVaV2RGzAQ4hug/s320/Paysonlakes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512831472751428882" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQdFMvugu8d4CJt4STcfgY9MnrHhdM3JBfucPCg58AMlSAvLVu5OEG_o2YCxii6lhP9g5io-Zhmr43Jpn4PQ4WbvWxq1sYSWnRCGdImTs4QG0WU-mtFcIQ9yHsRDC7WdACxgFGJquKlWo/s320/hoover+dam1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512831097822697298" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq_wBf0jzck1WBOD_mBxG7wCqvbdbvTluLrgo0OCye-npR7Uk4tzub4_N4qOgACE8B1X5J9NIkM2HYv92DJKXL8xpDybJ_lr3HMtPfUSBSTyUfWiI7wYwHhsW084WeoTdSHJ6Y4JZzjYY/s320/Hoover+Dam.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512723077914309602" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqn195z8TcRUB1l90el24ShFMtj7Qndg2b4nJG58Y0EEmTWzKsEGYLMnmCya4WnxnOoBERkYnXMw1l9OZ7l6FyOyOcFgnPXHOojCldoECKo4Q5qL8pO0DBZpco2o9rcWc7WARCUmuG7Xs/s320/LV+family.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512720376447112354" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjQpz24AbZuviKSvkYb46qV3BGDHriG_3yWKaiQBAbqKxHdNM9FB8eQfVAAtAk1SZAXlmROuLdL5jKoPJge8yHQ_m2Qlh1d05FFK6q0Pr87ZeWSQFA5JX78N7BF2auEUtkoYBJOYaEBN8/s320/P1000690.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512715150501774050" />
This summer is for the most part over and I have been having too much fun to work on the blog....so this blog will probably leave out some of the details, but hopefully record some of the things we have done so that I don't forget. I am getting old and I forget things quickly!
Our first family adventure was to Las Vegas. Okay, it is not the ultimate place for a family vacation, but it worked well for us. We have a timeshare through Wyndham, and there is a very nice resort in Vegas, which we have gone to a couple of times. Greg and I have wanted the kids to see some of the shows there that we have enjoyed like a Cirque de Soule. We went to see Mystere. It was great! Nothing like Ka' which Greg and I had seen before, but it was still amazing.
We have spent time camping as well. We discovered one site that was up Provo Canyon way up past Squaw Peak, called the Hope Campground. It was beautiful, but the drive was steep! We were joined by Matt and Sharlene, Ryan and Lauren and Billy and a Rebecca and kids, as well as Michael and Christy and kids. It was a lot of fun, but we probably won't go back to that site because of the drive to get there. Our second camping adventure was to Payson Lakes. This site was a winner! It is serene, and gorgeous. I told Lauren that I always feel closer to God when I am camping...she ssid it is because you ARE closer to God when you are camping. I love to look at all the amazing beauties of nature. I take in the smells of the pine, the brightness of the night sky and stars that I never can see at home with all the city lights. I really love to camp! We bought a little inflatable raft, and the kids were able to take it out to fish. Everyone caught a few fish, and we fried them up for dinner. I have to say they were pretty tasty. Milo ate the left overs, and was very possessive of his food that night! He turns his nose up to tuna, but he loved the trout!Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-57574699673404509002010-05-02T23:44:00.006-06:002010-09-20T21:37:50.174-06:00Minute to Win ItSo it's time for an update. I have been wanting to post our family's attempt at "Minute To Win It"! There is a new game show on television by the same name. It is a "Game Show" made up of gaming challenges like you may play at a school or birthday party--the only difference is you only have one minute to complete the task, and you win lots of money! we made an attempt to do it with the family and it was a lot of fun. We didn't have large cash prizes, but we had some great "white elephants". We had a lot of fun and Taylor ended up being the Champion. Too bad we didn't have a million dollar prize for him!Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-50710154090430308042010-04-09T11:03:00.004-06:002010-04-09T11:17:16.166-06:00Milo--He's Big He's Fluffy and Has Better Manners!!!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbAEF6R1w4wPq1ym7NDK9YQFH4embmQLKbau9dsxpQYWIFyEq-wANJVu1CM7_PhQMVbyg9Jml-voMefkmrAhCrtYgR9zMgued_QBEFv7hlL24FGemzNxixeLmL6j5RFtrmcMJm-rTPoAQ/s320/P1000607.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458187963974463970" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIi5mfBbTeL6HmCKajZB9HE2h2EZ78kG59hKenkHEEcmph11dvvTqwd-YRPUJEfATMI4VS8xrdrD9RLuPCsV_p_gN6BqyvjJVQ7KgIdTNMI97n_Jy9MCUdEfhEnji4mP5HzNYqpgozP6c/s320/P1000603.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458187847748215746" />
Greg just completed taking Milo to Basic Dog Training. We were skeptical at first because Milo is a bit out of control at times. He acts out the most in new situations, around other dogs and when he is nervous...just the perfect setting for dog training! The first 20 minutes of the first session had me worried. He barked, paced and basically did everything we didn't want him to do. I am happy to report that after 6 weeks of training he can do remarkable things. He sits (which he did before) but now he actually "stays". He can "leave it"...even the yummy dog treats he craves so much. He can be calmed and we think he is ready for his next round of training. Greg hopes to use him as a Therapy Dog. It will take a lot of work. Milo is smart and if Greg is persistent in training him I think they will make a fantastic team! They both have the perfect personalities for a "Therapy" team.Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-51570081514793302752010-04-01T17:04:00.010-06:002010-04-09T11:03:01.486-06:00Michael Buble'-A Night out with my Hubby<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxbCCYoCFFzSO9wxFluVNUD8ynUpam54zdxGMGuGbU14sO3oDClfKJEy-MIPil1yuoNP2zO-RoI-TowS4-FxbGjHUmz2Xmv5BH50zQk6G5kbXSj0JSeU2Rv9zx63XywMxAgveu5glR6dg/s320/P1000618.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458182471067471346" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-FnjHKiRK-gpdsSeoWAoi6Q1VVf0-OlLuuNQvPSYWxyqqY_iDdLGkTwGotVW6tjgYkqArntYa1CyrY3cqfs1O6ZFY2IlWDAutAiyizAR9r2yL8Afg19bKwkDY60RftOgYYyr-dxgUJXE/s320/P1000620.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458182372961657506" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq7vg0M_aHdAwuHxzK2vXs5g-2BClYoXJZm4qZWDWQq16qNMERSK5c6qx701kWOI9gODeNst3akRz7CD_7HLXeo93M_ZzrrdE_y8mJeJdPAnt0AMKKIulOGkVKox_va1sppkd3ttdI3rw/s320/P1000623.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458182293134068226" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQT1zpKLs-LohUo4xpr8x49m7xli8vm_v07DqlwQqAb45kuJEnwjXaRkdNcmtRuVYQKrNj3QvuC3k090zp7gY0tzOOLQxqEm29f7pduqn6L2jOTEkk5U9s0OjXW4Y0MUkjmIFnWV0ixZY/s320/P1000627.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458182230278749090" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ5D4hCRqy8raHMQEX_3nELhVcphrZVcYryAtK6A2AzXYd5CiCVUNgw32-vpSK57WMgnuvReCHl4rEr_55HJCbaOZnvQzb6OFXZ3CpYcYAK9sHGdOeHsC3Ps9jS86n4aDhG3SsU3tiIUQ/s320/P1000631.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458181782573239890" />
As soon as I heard Michael Buble' was coming in concert in SLC I wanted tickets! I knew Greg would love it too...he loves music of all types, but we both find his music so relaxing and wonderful. Tickets to his concert were sold out so I am glad we got them early! It was a fantastic concert. I was very impressed with the opening act Naturally 7. They are a group that accompanies themselves with instrument sounds that they make vocally. I think it is called "vocal play". I'm sure they have a youtube video. We had a great time. MB is a fantastic performer and singer. The technical displays were amazing. It was a night I will remember for a long time! Thanks for the great date!( Concert was 3/31/10 at the E Center)Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-9126703840666005282010-03-20T19:38:00.021-06:002010-03-21T02:33:46.958-06:00Spring--Please Stay---We NEED YOUIt is just time for Spring to come and stay! We cleaned the garage today...okay Greg did most of the cleaning of the garage, but I am really appreciative of it! It makes me feel like I want to get the rest of the winter messes cleaned up...The yard, the storage rooms, the shed, the closets....Spring must be coming because I am feeling like Spring Cleaning:) The problem with my projects is that it requires much help from my family, which also means that I either get willing help which is nice, or have to beg and plead for help, which makes me a bit grouchy. Everyone likes to have things cleaned up, but no one really enjoys doing it.

So what has been going on at the Romero's for the past month or so? Greg and I had a great trip to Las Vegas for Valentines. We stayed at the Bellagio and then at the South Point. We got to go to a few shows...The Blue Man Group and Lion King. They were great! I was totally impressed with the costumes in Lion King. We had so much fun that we just booked a week there for a family vacation in June. We are staying at the Grand Desert, which is part of our Wyndham time share. I know it is kind of a slimmy place for a family vacation, but off the strip I think we will enjoy the warm weather, great pools, fun shows and great food!(Chocolate Fountain at Bellagio)

Panda's for Chinese New Year at the Bellagio

My work has been CRAZY. Primary Children's has been it busiest ever. Our unit, not usually effected by seasonal illnesses because it is a Newborn ICU has had very sick babies, and because the rest of the hospital has been so busy has had a few "boarders" from other units, and a shortage of nurses. To top that off I have been very sick the past two weeks. I aspirated my own spit!!! Isn't that disgusting? Don't try it at home, you can really get quite sick.Greg and Milo have been in a dog training class. The ultimate goal is to get Milo trained to be a therapy dog. He has a long way to go, but Greg has really been working hard with him and he has come a long way. You can actually come into our house now without him knocking you over! He is getting good at "sitting" and "waiting"....and even "leave it" which is hard for him when her wants to steal food off the counter, or take off with a sock on the floor! I have hope for their "Therapy Dog" future.

Cameron and Lindz are plugging along. Check out their blog for their latest info. Lindsey does at great job at keeping it updated. Lindz and I are counting down the days until we get to pick up our new I-pads. Of course Cam is getting one too....It is a new Apple product after all. I had fun this week having Cameron visit the NICU. I am so excited for him to start his career in nursing. It will be interesting to see what he decides to do with his degree...Where he will work and what he will be doing. I know he will do great!

Matt is living at home now. Sharlene is working in Salt Lake, and it just made more sense for him to live closer to where she was so that they could date and make plans for the future. Sharlene is an assistant event planner for the Salt Palace. She gets to be involved in many exciting events that take place there. Matt is still commuting to Lindon with his job at TAM. He is hoping to find something in Salt Lake. I am hoping he will get back in school soon. Waiting to decide when they will get married, but they are thinking about August.

Taylor is still at UVU. He is an avid Jazz fan and has been to lots of games this season. He is trying to get along with his psycho roomate, and is learning lots of life's lessons at this point in his life. School is challenging and a little stressful. He is a smart kid, it just takes a lot of getting organized and buckling down to get the grades. I have lots of faith in him.

Ryan is full of life and excitement! Had a great fancy date to Junior Prom. Isn't he a handsome guy? He just informed me that he is going to run for SBO. He already has a pretty busy year planned for next year...but it will be his last year of high school so I say...Live it Up. If you don't get involved in school it is hard to stay motivated to go your last year.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW5Utk7oq71FYBCqWf23UzB9BGbh_YoVhIaZf5vSisLUvsCo1hm-HtaepHZdIFvNgGV3ybtbvauzM3533SATpLL2TPvfjfGROciLTG2hU2CvLhwm9L3fpyPDtlKn5BsiTIqwM8CoNux-o/s320/P1000590.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451000777497842274" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji2jEUYesTPhQKwA_HitAwJah00buov7ArLWXcCoBOHaUwFnDn_ePQquRZVTUpR_bNL6ifFbx1SGEPUD-_vuX0bhod0UVT5PTLPpZ-WB0B3brM23gQYx3Abum_KHY1CNNvZC4W0mAhmdk/s320/P1000592.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451002421238538386" />
Ryan and his date Lenyx
Lauren is enjoying Young Womens. She has also been selling Girl Scout cookies for Girl Scouts. They are sooo good. She is crafting up all kinds of things with her Cricut paper cutter and is doing great in school. This year has been a little challenging for her. She is learning that many kids aren't "nice" and not every teacher loves her....and even if they don't she still has to grin and bear it. It is much more fun when everyone is nice and your teacher loves you!Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-9857406292146177852010-01-31T16:35:00.013-07:002010-02-02T18:02:44.991-07:00Bye Bye January...one month closer to SPRING!!!
I don't especially like winter. I don't hate it because there are some great things about it, but about this time of the winter I start looking forward to Spring. What do I like about winter...New snow on the trees and how it still looks light outside even when it is dark. I like the smell of wood burning fireplaces. I like seeing my kids get excited for snowboarding. I used to love to ski...hope to again when I get rid of more of this fat...hope I don't break something, but I am going to do it again. I love Christmas. I love getting together with family. I love Greg making his shopping lists and making sure we don't forget anyone. He is so good at that. I love hot chocolate and oh yes, the christmas lights! We have our favorite places to go to see them. One year we took all the kids on a carriage ride after visiting Temple Square. The streets were packed with snow, and it was bright outside, even though it was dark...just the way I like it. We went to Memory Grove in the carriages, and it was spectacular. It was the perfect night for taking a carriage ride. I don't think any of us will ever forget that night.
What I don't like about winter, at least here in Salt Lake is the inversion. Salt Lake has about the worst air quality in the nation. I remember bringing Doris here when she was frail with lung cancer. She had lived in Port Angeles with cloudy skies, but clean fresh air. I felt like I was poisoning Doris a bit, and it was quite embarrassing to have such horrible air. The entire family is fighting upper respiratory infections right now. We'd all get better sooner if the air would clear out! I don't like dirty lawns, that have junk on them the wind blows around, but it is too cold to clean them up. I don't like the mud. I don't like freezing hands, nose or toes. I don't like huge heating bills!
I keep seeing geese and ducks flying along the river...NORTH, and sticking around like they may be nesting...and that means that spring is coming.
I like Spring because...well first of all winter is over! Also because of the new flowers, baby animals, new beginnings, clean starts, motivation to clean the house and longer daylight.Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-12267085582548948302010-01-01T16:43:00.004-07:002010-01-02T15:03:24.453-07:00The End of Decade...Welcome 2010It always feels weird to see a decade pass away. Ten years ago I still had little kids at home for Christmas, and Santa was anxiously anticipated by a few of them! Most of the boys still thought girls had fleas, and Lauren only knew how to smear lipstick from one end of her body to the other, no concept of making herself more attractive by applying it. Greg had his gadgets, but his phone just had voice mail and call waiting, nothing like the I-phone!I was still teaching preschool and volunteering at the elementary school. We could go to dinner as a family and order from the kids menus, and I drove a mini van. Time changes so many things. Cameron is married, Matt is engaged, and Taylor and Ryan definitely understand that girls don't have fleas, and for some hormonal and instinctive reason are drawn to beautiful young ladies! Lauren knows all about the Mac counter at Nordstrom and is quite the makeup artist. None of the kids believe in Santa, and in fact are beginning to understand that Christmas is much more than Santa....that being Santa is much more exciting than getting from Santa. I don't miss the mini-van, and I loved teaching preschool, but I am so thankful for my job in the PCMC NICU as an RN.

Here are some pictures from then and now...kind of fun for me. It seems like just a few days or maybe even a year or two ago,....but alas it has been ten!

This was then......

Taylor and Gramee decorating for Christmas 1999
Lauren the bowling queen 1999Greg and Karine at the "Great Wall" China
Karine, Matt and Cam at the Empire State building...just after 9-11
Taylor, Ryan and Lauren... We have been fortunate enough in our life together to have traveled many places. I count it one of my greatest blessings. I remember when Greg and I were talking about getting married, one of the things I really worried about was that he had not traveled much, and at the time was terrified of flying. He assured me that even though he had not been on many family vacations, or traveled much, he hoped to in the future. Little did I know he would graduate and a get a job with IBM. IBM has extensive training, requiring him to fly back and forth to Atlanta and New York quite a few times. He later had a job with Franklin Covey, where he traveled a couple of times a month. He was able to take me along sometimes, and that began our love of traveling together. He has also taken each of the boys on some memorable trips when he traveled for work....Lauren is patiently waiting her turn.
At any rate... as it is the season of being thankful, I am thankful for many things, but tonight I am thinking about all the great Fall trips we have been on. Most recently to San Fransisco. Whenever I go to San Fransisco I think of my oldest son Cameron. He fell in love with that city as a young boy. Greg grew up just outside of the city in Livermore, and we visited San Fransisco often. When Cameron was in Junior High we went with him to a Junior High career counseling session and he told us that he greatest aspiration was to have an apartment in San Fransisco and be a businessman there. He planned to stay single until he was 30, get rich there and enjoy life as a bachelor in SF. We were a little worried, but thought he was a young dreamer, so we would go with it. He married young, still loves San Fransisco, but probably won't ever live there....

Greg had a seminar in SF this October. It was one of the best times I have ever spent in San Fransisco. His meetings were at the Fairmont Hotel located at the very top of Nob Hill. To save money for the company he works for, he opted to stay at a boutique hotel a few blocks away. Each morning he would get up and walk to the conference. Each evening he would complain of his shins hurting. He explained to me that he had to climb a steep hill to get to the hotel, and he thought that was what was making his legs hurt. On the final day of the conference, I decided to meet him at the Fairmont, take in the views and see some of the great architecture of the hotel. I walked a little ways and got the the St. Francis hotel and asked the bell man how to get to the Fairmont. He said, see that hill, just keep climbing up! It was a very steep hill, and as I climbed the trolley passed me a couple of times. I kept wondering how I could get on that trolley! Never did figure that out, but I knew Greg would know, and we could ride it back down the hill. I finally arrived at the Hotel, tired and impressed with myself for making it to the top! Greg showed me around the hotel. It was magnificent. There were pictures in the hallway of the hotel before the earthquake and fire in 1906, as well as many Presidents and celebrities who had made speeches or performed in the Venetian Room. It is quite a place, not to mention a spectacular view from the top of the hill.
We were able to spend some great times together. We attended a concert at the Oakland temple grounds. A Livermore friend of Greg's, Raymond Lee played the cello. It was beautiful and relaxing. We were able to go out to dinner with him and his wife Shaunna at a Thai restaurant later in the week. We really enjoyed getting to know them better. They have a passel of handsome boys, reminded me of when our children were younger.
We stayed in a cute hotel. It was an old Boutique hotel called the "Triton". It looked like it had been decorated by Dr. Suess. I think every guy that worked there was in touch with their feminine side, but very friendly and helpful. There was a cute little card shop next to the hotel that I enjoyed browsing through. The lady that worked behind the counter was awful. She was rude and unkind to the customers. It seemed ironic to me that such a bitter woman would work at a Hallmark card shop. I asked her if they sold stamps, instead of saying "no" she pointed to a sign hooked to the cash register that said, "We don't sell stamps...the post office is located"...with the address following.
We spent time doing things we have done many times, and a few we hadn't experienced before. We saw the sea lions at Pier 39. They are a noisy bunch, each one has a story to tell and they want to be heard! We shopped at Union Square--I shopped while he was in classes. One day the rain started while I was in Macy's. I had no choice but to run through the rain back to the hotel. The roads were like small rivers. I was literally soaked to the bones. I hung up my clothes to dry over the shower door, and they never did dry out all the way! We ate at Cheesecake Factory on top of Macy's. The view was spectacular, and a band was playing in Union Square making the night even more memorable. We had eaten there before with all of the kids, and a couple of their friends when we went to California on a vacation a few years earlier. I sure liked the price of the meal this time compared to the last visit there with nine people!
Enough rambling....but Fall vacations are a must. So are vacations to somewhere warm, in the winter when it is freezing in Utah. Something about the sunshine in the winter that warms the soul and helps one make it through the chill of Utah!

Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-59134465999510686582009-11-20T11:06:00.000-07:002009-11-24T18:48:03.186-07:00Matt's Getting Married!Matt had Sharlene's Sorority Sisters stage a "Prom" (because he had promised to take her to one in High School and never did.) Matt and Sharlene Witt will be married on January 16, 2009. I felt all kinds of emotions about this. How is a mom to know if her child is ready for such a big step as marriage? I worry, I get excited, I worry, I get excited. I have a lot of faith in both of them. Sharlene has been a friend of Matt's for years and years, and we have known and loved her for a long time. She will be graduating from SUU (Southern Utah University ) in Business Management with and emphasis in Marketing. Matt will be continuing on with his education, and working at TAM Solutions as a computer repair tech. It will be a busy few months with the holidays and then a wedding. Lauren is excited to be a bridesmaid, and all the fun that comes along with a wedding.Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420996970635576053.post-80892393884437002322009-09-11T09:31:00.000-06:002009-09-11T09:46:05.256-06:00New Era for the RomerosMatt came home from his mission and stayed for such a short time...only a few days, and then he and Taylor headed down to Orem to live and attend the Utah Valley University. They are living at Wolverine Crossing. It looks like a fun place to live, and is much better than the "cave" we dropped Matt off at when he first went to college a few years ago. He wanted a private room, and that is all he had, a room, more like a closet in a hall. It was horrible, and I felt sad leaving him there. This is a much better gig! We haven't seen much of him since school started. He had a lot of quick adjustments to making getting back to "real" life. He had his homecoming at church, school, a move, buying a car (which was a small nightmare in and of itself), starting a computer repair business and dating again. Taylor has popped in and out a bit. He called me the other day to tell me that the new laundry softener I bought, which he used when doing his laundry at home, "Changed his life"...I think he likes it. Maybe the good smells will remind him of home!
It is strange and more peaceful having just two kids at home now. Can't say the house is cleaner because it is torn to pieces trying to get the basement fixed from a flood. New carpet, tile, paint, baseboards..the works.
Ryan and Lauren are both doing great in school. Ryan has 3 college classes because he is in a program to get his associates while in high school. Lauren is adjusting to 6th grade. The girls are meaner and the boys are becoming more and more attractive to her! Lots of time spent texting and on the computer!
Greg, Taylor, Matt and I are joining a fantasy football league and the draft is today. I am excited! Greg has done the league for a couple of years now and we all got into seeing how his team was doing. We thought we'd all get a piece of the action this year!
Cameron and Lindsey are busy as ever. Cameron just started the nursing program at SLCC. He discovered he has high blood pressure. The nursing program does that to lots of people! I am way excited for him, and know it is a very stressful time in his life--but it will be worth it. Lindsey is getting started with a new year of teaching Kindergarten. I think the beginning of the year is always taxing and busy. They are enjoying a new apartment in West Jordan ( I think that is the city) It is by Gardner Village. Good Luck Cam and Lindz!Karine Romerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12020893391800040402noreply@blogger.com0
